ISLAMABAD: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck southeastern Afghanistan on Tuesday evening, with tremors felt across parts of Pakistan, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The quake originated at 17:30 PST at a depth of 22 kilometres, with its epicentre located at latitude 34.76°N and longitude 70.81°E in southeastern Afghanistan.

Tremors were reported in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad as well as Peshawar, Abbottabad, Mansehra and Swat, the PMD said.

The earthquake comes just two days after a powerful 6.0 magnitude quake struck Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province, killing more than 1,400 people and injuring over 3,000, according to Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

Rescue and relief operations are continuing in the affected areas, where thousands of homes were destroyed.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage from Tuesday’s tremor.
