ISLAMABAD: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke of strengthening his country’s cooperation with Moscow “in all areas” following an “excellent meeting” with Russian President Vladimir Putin during an economic summit in China.

His positive remarks come amid a downturn in US-India relations. President Donald Trump has imposed further tariffs on Indian goods in response to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, despite Moscow’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, reports Newsweek.
“I had an excellent meeting with President Putin on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Tianjin,” Modi posted to X, originally in Russian, on Monday, September 1.
Deepening bilateral cooperation
“We discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation in all areas, including trade, fertilizers, space, security, and culture. We exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.
“Our Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership remains a key pillar of regional and global stability.”
The leaders of China and India say there is now deepening trust between them after years of tension that includes a long-running border dispute, reports the BBC.
China’s President Xi Jinping and Indian PM Narendra Modi met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) in the port city of Tianjin. It is Modi’s first time in China in seven years.
