SEOUL/WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden said on Monday that Washington and Seoul are not discussing joint nuclear exercises. Earlier, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said that his country and the US are discussing possible joint nuclear exercises.
“No,” Joe Biden said when asked by journalists at the White House if he was presently discussing joint nuclear exercises with Seoul.
The South Korean President’s statement was published by a newspaper on Monday, followed Yoon’s call for “war preparation” with an “overwhelming” ability, following North Korea had conducted a record number of missile tests in 2022.

Yoon told Chosun Ilbo newspaper that the nuclear arms belong to the US, but information sharing, planning, exercises and training should be jointly conducted by the United States and South Korea.

The media outlet quoted the South Korean President as claiming the joint exercises would be aimed at effective implementation of the United States (US) “extended deterrence” and that the US was also “quite positive” about the idea.
