ISLAMABAD: Japan, which is currently facing the eighth Covid-19 wave since November, logged a record 7,688 deaths due to the disease in December. The previous record was set in August 2022 with as many as 7,329 logged in August during the seventh wave, according to statistics.

During the current wave, Covid-19 deaths have markedly increased with 438 deaths on 27 December and 400 on 28 December.

However, during the end-of-the-year holidays, the toll has fallen below 200, reported Japanese media sources.

Omicron strain behind the eighth wave in Japan

Currently, an increase in infections has occurred by an order of magnitude due to the higher transmissibility of the Omicron strain, even though, the severity of the disease is less.

Japanese authorities are afraid that during the ongoing New Year holidays both the number of infections and deaths will increase.
