KABUL: Several people are feared dead in a blast outside the military airport in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, the interior ministry spokesman said.
“Today morning, an explosion occurred outside a military airport in Kabul, due to which several citizens were martyred and several sustained injuries,” spokesman Abdul Nafi Takor told a foreign news agency. He said that an investigation is underway into the explosion.
The spokesman did not specify the nature or target of the attack. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the explosion.
Area sealed after the blast
Local residents who witnessed the explosion said a loud explosion was heard before 8 am (03:30 GMT) in the jurisdiction of the military side of the heavily fortified airport.
They said security forces had sealed off the area and blocked all roads.
The Taliban government claims to have improved security since returning to power in August 2021; however, there have been several attacks and bomb blasts, several claimed by the local chapter of the ISIL (ISIS) militants’ group.
In December 2022, at least five Chinese nationals were injured when ISIL attackers stormed a hotel popular with Chinese citizens in Kabul.
Hundreds of people, including members of minority communities in Afghanistan, have been killed and injured in attacks since the Taliban returned to power.
