LONDON: Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has stressed the need to continue negotiations between the US and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear programme during a phone call with Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

According to WAM, the Emirates News Agency, Abdelatty described the negotiations as a vital opportunity to promote calm, prevent escalation, and stop the region from descending into further instability.

Oman is set to host the sixth round of talks between Iran and the United States on Sunday, the Omani foreign minister announced on Thursday.

Abdelatty and Witkoff, the US President’s special envoy for the Middle East, during the phone call, discussed ongoing Egyptian and American efforts to secure a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Their talks also covered the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian detainees, as well as the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian coastal enclave, WAM reported.

The Egyptian foreign minister highlighted the need for a lasting resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that meets the region’s aspirations for peace and stability.
