CAIRO: Officials said on Monday that they have destroyed a number of Al-Shabaab secret militia that were linked to Al-Qaeda following conducting operations in several areas in Shabelie region, south of Somalia.

Somali News Agency (SONNA) reported Somali army destroyed checkpoints where the militants were extorting money. It claimed that the Somali Army and local forces, supported by international partners, made tangible military progress against the militants in southern Somalia.

On Friday, the US carried out a strike in Somalia that killed six Al-Shabaab militants. US Africa Command said in a statement that an airstrike has killed six militants in the area. It said that the strike was conducted at the request of the government of Somalia. It added that no civilians were killed or wounded in the strike.
