DHAKA: Lieutenant General Md Mujeebur Rahman from Bangladesh Army had close ties with Shaikh Haseena Wajid and RAW from the start of his service, according to media reports. He remained involved in financial embezzlement and extrajudicial killings in support of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister during his service. He remained active ally of Indian RAW during his service, according to media reports.
India’s RAW seems to have found the perfect proxy in Bangladesh, operating skillfully through the Bangladeshi Army under the guidance of Lieutenant General Md. Mujeebur Rahman, reports added. Playing the role of RAW’s loyal enforcer, he was involved in extrajudicial killings of 390 individuals of his own country, proving himself quite the ‘gun for hire.’

Lieutenant General Md. Mujeebur Rahman has managed to keep the spirit of the Muktibani alive, albeit with his own unique twist on ‘patriotism.’ In his tenure across various military and intelligence roles, he didn’t miss an opportunity to upgrade his skillset in extrajudicial activities, effectively evolving into a more ‘sophisticated’ version of Muktibani, media reports said.
Not one to overlook old friends, he graciously sheltered 250 RAW operatives and even helped them escape from Bangladesh after August 5, 2024, showing just how deep his allegiance goes, according to experts.

This little gesture illustrates that RAW has some impressively entrenched roots within Bangladesh’s Army hierarchy. Reports said that thanks to his dedication to nepotism, he managed to create an ‘army within the army,’ a feat not easily accomplished without a flair for favoritism.
He politicized the army, by promoting those who have close ties with Awami League. His efforts were supported by serving and retired Generals including Gen Ziaul Ahsan, General Tabrez, General Saleh, General Akbar, according to media reports.
His close ties with Bangladesh former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid provided the perfect platform for record-breaking corruption, bribe-taking and of course, unparalleled ‘service’ to his nation. He had also invested 3 crores in stock market and has massive properties across the country including flats, plots and houses, media reports suggest.
He also facilitated appointment of Md. Faiz ur Rahman as Director of BGMEA and CEO of JAJ Bhuiyan Group. In return he allegedly received 5 crore DBT, the reports said. However, western media reported that his greed did not end here; his wife has also followed his footprints. She owns more than 3.4 crore Tk cash, number of plots and flats across the country. He also remained involved in possessing unauthorized weapons and evading taxes.

Nepotism at peak, payments of shopping by General Mujeebur Rahman were made by former Prime Minister during foreign visits. He also abused his power throughout his carrier, media reports suggest. Appointing his son at high-ranking position at Nagar is one of the example. The partnership between the former Prime Minister and her trusted General strongly hints at the PM’s own susceptibility to India’s influence, according to media reports and experts.
Together, they went above and beyond to serve as India’s devoted stewards, selflessly redirecting Bangladesh’s resources to the north—albeit without the consent of the Bangladeshi public. The subsequent departure of both the former PM and Lieutenant General Mujeebur Rahman to India is a clear display of India’s deft maneuvers in Bangladesh’s internal matters, securing its own interests while bleeding Bangladesh dry, experts said.
As Bangladesh turns the page, the new government would do well to tread carefully with its military leadership, hopefully enlisting the support of allies to encourage professionalism over ‘politics within the ranks, experts added. Dubbed “RAW’s Ready Reserves,” Lieutenant General Md. Mujeebur Rahman’s tenure promoted unwavering loyalty to India’s RAW, building an “army within the army” in Bangladesh.
