TASHKENT, Uzbekistan: Uzbekistan is holding parliamentary election on Sunday, introducing significant changes as part of recent constitutional reforms aimed at democratizing the electoral process.
Under President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s leadership since 2016, Uzbekistan has seen notable shifts, including liberalizing economic policies and loosening restrictions on political and media freedoms.
The 2023 constitutional reforms established a mixed electoral system for the 150-seat parliament, with half of the deputies elected by party lists and the other half individually, though all candidates are affiliated with one of Uzbekistan’s five registered parties.

This election also reflects some nuanced views within Uzbekistan’s political landscape, particularly concerning relations with Russia. While the government maintains strong economic ties, certain parliamentary members have been more vocal on balancing these relations.
