Tunisia Sentences Opposition Leader Noureddine Bhiri to Ten Years in Prison

TUNIS: A court in Tunisia has awarded sentenced the prominent opposition leader in Ennahda party Noureddine Bhiri to ten years in jail, on charges of assaulting state security and inciting citizens against each other, a lawyer said.

According to Reuters Bhiri’s lawyer Monia Bouali claimed that the trial was flawed by many legitimate violations as a social media post attributed to the opposition leader that technical tests proved did not occur at all.

Noureddine Bhiri has been in custody for around 18 months, along with many rival leaders of the incumbent President Kais Saied. Reuters reported that the current President, who has tightened his control on authority and initiated ruling by decree in a move the opposition termed as a coup.
