BEIRUT: At least six people were killed and 15 injured on Tuesday in an Israeli strike on Hezbollah’s stronghold in southern Beirut, a day after the deadliest strikes that killed more than 558 people in Lebanon, the health ministry said.

The “Israeli enemy raid on Ghobeiri in Beirut’s southern suburbs killed six people and injured 15,” Lebanon’s health ministry said in a statement.

The health ministry reported that the attack in the Ghobeiri neighborhood resulted in significant destruction, particularly to a residential building where the Israeli strikes hit two floors.

An anonymous Lebanese security source confirmed the details of the strike to AFP, stating that it specifically targeted Hezbollah’s infrastructure in the densely populated region.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged conducting a targeted strike in Beirut but provided few details about the operation. “The IDF conducted a strike in Beirut. Details to follow,” the military stated.

Witnesses at the scene described scenes of devastation, with damaged vehicles and debris strewn across the area. Initial reports from rescue teams had indicated three fatalities, but the official count from the health ministry later confirmed six deaths.

This latest strike follows a day of devastating bombardments across southern and eastern Lebanon on Monday, which killed over 558 people according to the Lebanese health ministry—marking the deadliest day of violence.

Hezbollah stated that Ali Karake, its third-in-command, was the intended target of the Monday strike, but the group later confirmed that he was unharmed and had moved to safety.

The attacks came after coordinated explosions involving communications devices that killed 39 people and injured thousands the previous week.

Those were followed by a deadly strike on Friday in south Beirut, with leading Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Aqil among the dead.
