ISLAMABAD: Apple unveiled the highly anticipated iPhone 16, confirming numerous rumors that had circulated recently. Among the most exciting updates is the new Desert Titanium color for the Pro models, which had been widely speculated.
The iPhone 16 series introduces significant enhancements, including a larger display and a new capture button across all models, from the base iPhone 16 to the premium iPhone 16 Pro Max. Pricing for the iPhone 16 Pro Max remains consistent with its predecessor, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, at $1,199. However, in Pakistan, local taxes and PTA approval costs will drive the price higher. The PTA fee for the iPhone 15 series currently reaches up to Rs180,000, and the iPhone 16 is expected to incur a similar or even higher fee.
Unofficial prices for the iPhone 16 base model in Pakistan could exceed Rs450,000, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max may approach Rs900,000. Last year, the iPhone 15 Pro Max sold for as much as Rs900,000, including PTA charges and taxes, shortly after its launch.
Despite the steep prices, Apple enthusiasts and frequent upgraders are anticipated to embrace the new series. Apple distributor Mercantile in Pakistan has already removed iPhone 15 pricing from its website, hinting that the iPhone 16 series could be available by late September or early October.
Meanwhile, the parallel market continues to confuse buyers, with early importers selling iPhones at inflated prices. Local shopkeepers plan to import the iPhone 16 series soon, though initial stock may be limited. Some are also preparing to offer JV (gray market) models, which are expected to be more affordable than official PTA-approved versions. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has yet to address the influx of JV iPhones.
In addition to the iPhone 16 series, Apple announced several new products. The iPhone 16 introduces a new Camera Control button, the Action Button, and the new Apple A18 chip, alongside a tougher glass front and fresh colors. The iPhone 16 Plus features a larger 6.7-inch display. The Apple Watch 10 boasts a bigger screen, thinner body, and new finishes, including titanium, along with enhanced audio and sleep apnea detection. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 sees a new finish and Hermes band but no major updates.
AirPods 4 receive a redesign for comfort, improved audio, and spatial audio. The AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) will offer a more affordable ANC option between the standard AirPods 4 and the AirPods Pro 2. The existing AirPods Pro 2 will get new health features, including a hearing test, and the AirPods Max will be refreshed with new colors and added health capabilities. The iPhone 16 Pro models now include a 5x telephoto zoom camera and new camera modules, with the Camera Control button making its debut.
