17 Students Killed in Kenya School Fire: Officials

NAIROBI:  At least 17 students have died following a fire ripped through their school dormitory overnight in Kenya, police said on Friday. The blaze in Nyeri county’s Hillside Endarasha Academy broke out at midnight, police stated, engulfing a dormitory where the kids were sleeping.

National police spokesperson Resila Onyango said that there were 17 fatalities from the incident. The spokesperson added that injured have been shifted to the hospital.  However, Police did not release the ages of the affected students. Resila Onyango said that the bodies recovered at the scene were burnt beyond recognition.  She said that more bodies are likely to be recovered once the area is completely processed. According to local media reports, the cause of the fire remains unknown but an investigation has been launched over the matter.
