TEL AVIV, Israel: The United States is committed to defending Israel against any potential Iranian attack, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby stated on Tuesday.

Speaking to Israel’s Channel 12, Kirby emphasized that while the likelihood of an attack is uncertain, the US takes Iranian threats seriously and has enhanced its military presence in the region accordingly. He conveyed two messages to Iran: “Don’t escalate,” and affirmed US readiness to defend Israel if needed.

This commitment follows Iran’s promise of a severe response to the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, an act Iran attributes to Israel. The US has deployed two aircraft-carrier strike groups and additional F-22 fighter jets to the Middle East to deter any aggression.

Kirby also expressed optimism over a possible ceasefire agreement in Gaza, where a 10-month conflict persists, and efforts continue to secure the release of 108 Israeli hostages. He highlighted that talks remain “constructive,” with discussions progressing to working groups in Doha. Kirby refrained from assigning blame for the impasse, underscoring that compromise and leadership from both Israel and Hamas are essential. He viewed the continued negotiations as a hopeful sign for resolving the conflict.
