ISLAMABAD: The UK immigration system is undergoing a major digital overhaul, eliminating the need for physical documents such as Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs), visa vignette stickers, and wet ink stamps, according to a press release issued on Friday.
Starting soon, individuals granted visas for stays longer than six months—such as for work or study—will need to create a UKVI online account to manage their eVisa. This online account will serve as a digital record of their immigration status. In contrast, those visiting the UK for less than six months, such as tourists, will not be required to create a UKVI account.
British High Commissioner in Pakistan Jane Marriott said, “We are continually striving to make travel to the UK easier for Pakistanis. This shift to digital technology will streamline the visa process, enhance security, and reduce our reliance on paper documents.”
The transition to the digital system is designed to be free, secure, and user-friendly. For instructions on creating an account and further details, applicants can visit gov.uk/eVisa.
It is important to note that travelers should wait until they receive their passport and valid UK visa from the Visa Application Centre (VAC) before heading to the UK. The shift to an eVisa does not alter an individual’s immigration status or the terms of their stay.
Upon arrival in the UK, new arrivals will still need to collect a BRP. Although BRP cards are valid until 31 December 2024, their expiration will not affect an individual’s immigration status. Existing BRP cardholders can use their cards to set up their UKVI accounts and access their eVisas.
It is advised to continue carrying the BRP until it expires and to present both the BRP and passport when traveling abroad to demonstrate the right to return to the UK.
