TASHKENT: The 43rd UNESCO General Conference is scheduled to take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan in 2025, marking the first time the country will host the prestigious international event, Uzbek media outlet UzA reported, citing the European Geopolitical Forum.

The conference events will also be held across multiple historic cities in Uzbekistan, including Samarkand, Tashkent, Bukhara, Khiva, and Shahrisabz. This multi-city approach aims to showcase Uzbekistan’s rich cultural heritage and historical significance.

The event will focus on a range of UNESCO-related discussions and decisions, emphasizing the organization’s activities and strategic planning for future projects. Key projects under consideration include the establishment of the Great Silk Road Museum in Samarkand, which aims to highlight the historical and cultural significance of the ancient trade route.

Furthermore, there are plans to restore Amir Timur’s gardens and the Bibi-Khanum complex, as well as to develop a master plan for the protection of the historical center of Bukhara, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On March 15, Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev had signed a decree to initiate preparations for the international conference. The decree established an organizing committee chaired by Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov to oversee the event’s arrangements.

The conference sessions will be held at the Silk Road Samarkand tourist complex, a venue selected for its capacity to accommodate the high-profile international event and its proximity to Uzbekistan’s historical landmarks.

The 2025 General Conference will offer an opportunity for participating countries to engage in discussions about UNESCO’s global initiatives, cultural preservation efforts, and educational projects.
