BEIRUT: Lebanon-based Hezbollah group on Monday claimed fresh attacks on troops and military positions in northern Israel, including a drone strike and an attack on soldiers near the Lebanese border.

The group has exchanged regular cross-border fire with the Israeli army in support of ally Hamas since the war between Hamas and Israel started on October 7 in Gaza.

Fears of a major escalation increased after an Israeli strike last month on Beirut’s southern suburbs killed Fuad Shukr, one of Hezbollah’s top commanders, hours before an attack in Tehran, blamed on Israel, assassinated Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh. Both Iran and Hezbollah have vowed to retaliate.

Hezbollah on Monday said it conducted a “simultaneous air attack” with “explosive-laden drones” on two Israeli military positions, barracks near the border and a base near the coastal town of Acre, around 15 kilometres away from the border.

Hezbollah also said that its fighters targeted a group of Israeli soldiers infiltrating near the border and forced them to return.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah on Monday claimed a rocket and artillery attack on another Israeli barracks in retaliation for Israeli attacks. The cross-border violence has so far killed some 582 people in Lebanon, mostly Hezbollah fighters.
