JOHANNESBURG, South Africa: Ninety-five Libyan men detained at a suspected military camp in South Africa are set to be deported back to Libya, the home affairs ministry announced.

The men were arrested on July 26 during a police raid at a remote camp near White River, east of Johannesburg. Initially, they had entered South Africa in April on visas for security guard training, but authorities suspected they were receiving military training instead. The visas, issued in Tunis, were later found to be “irregularly acquired” and were canceled.

The Libyan government funded their deportation, and the group is scheduled to depart from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. Although initially charged with immigration violations, their case was dropped due to insufficient evidence. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber praised the swift action of officials and emphasized South Africa’s commitment to upholding immigration laws. Authorities have not ruled out further charges pending additional investigations.
