MOSCOW, Russia: Early Sunday morning, Ukrainian drones attacked an oil storage facility in Russia’s southern Rostov region, igniting a significant fuel fire, according to local governor Vasily Golubev. The incident occurred in the town of Proletarsk, where videos showed thick black smoke and flames. Governor Golubev reported that debris from the drone attack caused the fire after being repelled by air defences.
Although firefighting efforts were briefly halted due to a second drone attack, no injuries were reported, and the fire was eventually brought under control. Proletarsk is located about 250 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, making it a strategic target.
This attack is part of Ukraine’s ongoing strategy to strike Russian energy infrastructure, which President Volodymyr Zelensky has described as necessary retaliation for similar attacks on Ukraine. The incident underscores the escalating cross-border conflict, with Ukraine claiming control over 80 settlements in Russia’s Kursk region.
