KARACHI: Pakistan’s Awais Munir has won the Asian 6-Red Snooker Championship held in Riyadh, defeating Hong Kong’s cueist Nansen Wan in a thrilling final match on Tuesday.
Awais Munir secured a 6-3 victory over Wan after a closely contested battle. The match initially saw both players tied at 2-2, but Munir then surged ahead by winning three consecutive sets, taking a commanding lead at 5-2. Despite a comeback attempt by Nansen in the eighth frame, Munir displayed remarkable control and skill in the ninth frame to seal the championship.
The final scores of the match were 0-65, 35-26, 27-36, 38-20, 0-65, 13-46, 8-60, 34-0, and 27-40 in favor of Awais Munir.
Munir’s path to the championship included a notable semi-final victory over fellow Pakistani cueist Asjad Iqbal, whom he defeated 5-2 after initially trailing 0-2 in the match.
This victory adds another prestigious title to Pakistan’s snooker achievements, following Mohammad Hasnain’s success in the Asian U21 Snooker Championship. Hasnain had earlier clinched the title by defeating Ahsan Ramzan in the final, showcasing Pakistan’s dominance in the sport at the regional level.
Earlier in the tournament, Munir and Hasnain demonstrated their prowess by remaining undefeated in their respective matches and stages of the competition, underscoring their skill and determination on the snooker table.
