WASHINGTON: The United States has termed the imprisonment of former prime minister Imran Khas as “an internal matter of Pakistan”, hours following a UN working group said that the PTI founder’s detention is unlawful.
Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the US Department of State Vedant Patel has stated that he would let the UN detail their valuation. He said, “And in the case of Imran Khan, you have heard us say this before: This is an internal matter for Pakistan. I don’t have any valuation to offer from up here.”
Responding to a question regarding the US House resolution about Pakistan’s elections during Monday’s routine news briefing, he said that he would not speak about pending legislation. He said that Washington had consistently and privately urged Islamabad to respect the rights of its people.
“Let me just say broadly that when it comes to Pakistan, our most top officials, whether that be Secretary Blinken, Ambassador Blome, we have consistently and privately and publicly urged Islamabad to respect the rights of its people in line with its Constitution and global commitments,” he said.
He maintained that they have urged the Government of Pakistan to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and freedom of association.”
The spokesperson reiterated Washington’s stand on terrorism and emphasized on building positive ties with neighbours.
