Pakistan Seeking World’s Help to Cope with Climate Change: Minister

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal said on Monday that help was being sought from the world to cope with the challenge of climate change. He said that a framework has been devised to become a climate-resilient country as the South Asian nation is facing the worst challenge of climate change.

Addressing a function at the National Flood Response Centre in Islamabad, the minister said the framework will be presented to the world for their support and help. He pointed out that the federal, provincial governments, armed forces of the country and other organizations have successfully tackled the challenges posed by the recent floods in Pakistan.

The minister said the National Flood Response Center will be closed down following successful completion of emergency response operations. Ahsan Iqbal said the rehabilitation of flood victims and reconstruction will be implemented under a new mechanism to develop a climate-resilient infrastructure.

He said that the recent floods in Pakistan inflicted damage of more than $30 billion which is 10% of the total GDP of the country. He said that Sindh and Balochistan provinces of Pakistan witnessed the worst devastation in history. He asked the philanthropists to continue to assist the flood-hit people till their complete rehabilitation.
