CANBERRA, Australia: The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has released a controversial documentary titled “Spies, Secrets And Threats: How The Narendra Modi Govt Targets People Overseas.” Anchored by journalist Avani Dias, the documentary claims to expose the influence of the Indian state in Australia, alleging interference in the country’s national security. Despite its sensational assertions, the documentary has been criticized for lacking concrete evidence to support its claims.

The documentary opens with visuals of Prime Minister Narendra Modi amidst the recent 2024 Lok Sabha elections. It then delves into Modi’s long-standing association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), described as a “Hindu nationalist organisation” by the documentary. Priya Chacko, Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide, features in the documentary, labeling the RSS as a “far-right paramilitary organisation” and discussing Modi’s involvement in its training programs.

One of the most contentious aspects of the documentary is its coverage of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, featuring Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Pannun as a commentator. The documentary also explores the activities of pro-Khalistani figures in Australia, claiming to have interviewed individuals connected to the separatist movement.

Avani Dias, in a post on X, stated that the investigation reveals previously undisclosed information about an Indian “nest of spies” that had allegedly been expelled from Australia. The documentary suggests that the Modi government has been involved in foreign interference and the intimidation of dissidents abroad. It also highlights the disruption of an alleged spy network by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) and interviews Australian residents who claim to have been threatened by Indian authorities.
