DHAKA, Bangladesh: The impact of climate change on Bangladesh’s coastal regions is profound and alarming, with rising sea levels threatening the very existence of communities like Abdul Aziz’s. Government scientists warn that Bangladesh is experiencing sea level rise rates significantly higher than the global average, exacerbating the vulnerability of its densely populated coast.

A study reveals that by 2050, over a million people may be displaced due to this phenomenon, highlighting the urgent need for adaptation and mitigation measures.

The main drivers of sea level rise in Bangladesh include melting ice caps, warming oceans, and increased river water flow into the Bay of Bengal during monsoons. This escalation poses a dire threat to the livelihoods of coastal residents, who face not only displacement but also the destruction of their homes, farmland, and freshwater sources.

Moreover, the frequency and intensity of cyclones are on the rise, compounding the challenges faced by coastal communities. The destruction wrought by these cyclones, coupled with searing heatwaves, exacerbates the suffering of the most vulnerable populations, who are already grappling with poverty and food insecurity.

The situation underscores the urgent need for global action to curb carbon emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change.

Without concerted efforts by wealthier nations to address the root causes of climate change, countries like Bangladesh will continue to bear the brunt of its devastating impacts.

As Ainun Nishat from Brac University warns, Bangladesh is running out of time, and immediate action is needed to prevent further disasters and protect the lives and livelihoods of millions of people.
