Two More Polio Cases Detected in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s National Polio Laboratory has detected 2 more cases of Type-1 Wild Polio virus (WPV1) in the environmental samples collected from Peshawar and Faisalabad in November 2022.

Wild Polio Type-1virus (WPV1) has also been marked in the environmental sample collected from Peshawar in November 2022. The last Wild Polio-virus case from the district management was reported in July 2020. The district’s management conducted a previous anti-polio virus programme in October from 24 -30. The next polio programme will be planned from December 5 -11 in the Peshawar district.

New positive cases

According to the National Institute of Health officials, a new positive case was detected on November 7, 2022 from the pumping station-3 Achikaira. The last positive case sample was detected on April 05, 2021, from the district but starting from November 28, a week-long anti-polio virus campaign is currently going on under the district administration.

A commission of the Polio cases Oversight Board (POB) led by Dr. Chris Elias said there is unprecedented support and commitment to eliminating polio in Pakistan by 2023. During the visit, the commission met the prime minister, federal health minister, and the heads of provincial governments chief ministers of Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh, and support to help Pakistan eliminate poliovirus transmission by 2023.
