MUMBAI, India: Indian police arrested the owner of a billboard that collapsed on a petrol station and killed 16 people in the Mumbai.
Seventy-five people were rescued from underneath the wreckage of Monday’s accident when the massive hoarding fell during rain and dust storms that struck the coastal megacity.
Police opened a homicide case against the billboard’s owner Bhavesh Bhinde who fled coastal city Mumbai in the aftermath of the collapse.
He was arrested late Thursday in Udaipur, around 800 kilometres (497 miles) from the incident in the north.
Police official Lakhmi Gautam shared the details of the incident and the arrest with the media that the owner of the billboard Bhinde was caught from Udaipur hotel using name of his relative. The team sent to find him finally caught him on Thursday evening.
The fierce dust and rain storm that hit Mumbai on Monday uprooted trees, besides causing power outages in various neighbourhoods and disrupted the train network.
Mumbai’s international airport also grounded flights temporarily and 15 planes were diverted from the airport.
Eknath Shinde, Maharashtra State Chief Minister, ordered an audit of all billboards in Mumbai to prevent any repeat of the accident elsewhere.
