WASHINGTON, USA: US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, facing scrutiny over his judicial decisions and acceptance of lavish gifts from a billionaire Republican, has pushed back against criticism, dismissing it as “nastiness” and “lies,” as reported by US media.

Speaking at a judicial conference in Alabama, Thomas addressed the negativity surrounding him and his wife in recent years.

Despite the controversy, Thomas emphasized that they choose not to dwell on it and instead focus on the positive aspects of their lives.

Thomas, known for his staunch conservatism and status as the longest-serving justice on the court, has been embroiled in controversy following revelations about a trip funded by Republican donor Harlan Crow.

Additionally, calls for Thomas to recuse himself from cases related to the 2020 election due to his wife’s involvement in efforts to contest Joe Biden’s victory have added to the scrutiny.

Addressing the toxic environment in Washington, Thomas lamented the prevalence of negativity and emphasized the importance of not allowing critics to dictate one’s actions or mindset.

A ProPublica investigation revealed Thomas’s acceptance of gifts from Crow, including trips to exotic locations and exclusive resorts, with the total value likely exceeding $500,000. Crow defended the gifts as hospitality extended to a dear friend, denying any discussions about pending cases with Thomas.

Despite past controversies, including allegations of sexual harassment during his confirmation process in 1991, Thomas has remained influential on the court. He notably joined the majority in overturning the national right to abortion and advocated for a broader reconsideration of the court’s rulings on contraception and same-sex marriage.

Thomas’s response to criticism reflects his resilience in the face of scrutiny and his commitment to maintaining his judicial independence.
