DOHA: Qatar stated on Tuesday that the political leadership of the Palestinian resistance group Hamas would continue to remain in Doha as long as their presence is beneficial to ongoing mediation efforts aimed at resolving the conflict in Gaza.
“At this juncture, as long as their presence here in Doha contributes positively to our mediation endeavors, they will remain,” remarked Majed al-Ansari, spokesperson for the foreign ministry, during a press briefing.
Qatar, a host to Hamas’s political leadership since 2012 with tacit approval from the United States, has been actively involved in confidential negotiations for a potential ceasefire in Gaza and the potential release of Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian detainees held in Israeli prisons.
However, despite efforts by mediators including the United States and Egypt, no cessation of hostilities was achieved during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. In response, Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani announced last week that Qatar was reevaluating its role in the mediation process.
This announcement triggered speculation regarding the potential departure of Hamas from Qatar.
