NEW YORK: Tehran said on Sunday that it has no intention of engaging militarily with Washington in the region, but if the US initiates a military operation against Iran, its people, or security interests “Tehran will use its inherent right to reply proportionately.”
Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani told the UNSC meeting that Saturday’s strike on Israel was “precise, only attacked military objectives and was conducted carefully to minimize the potential for escalation and prevents civilian damage.”
Iran on Saturday launched a strike at Israel in retaliation against an Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria which killed around seven revolutionary guards, including two commanders. Tehran had warned that Israel would be “punished” for the attack.
At UN Security Council Meeting, US and Iran Swap Threats
During the meeting, US envoy Robert Wood has warned that “if Tehran or its proxies take actions against the US or further action against Israel, Iran will be held accountable. ”
The envoy condemned attack on Israel by Iranian side and its partners. It added that Iran’s “reckless actions” have posed a threat to Jordan and Iraq as well.
Russia’s Vasily Nebenzia alleged the council of hypocrisy and dual standard over its failure to convene in a similar fashion after Israel’s attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria. The Russian ambassador warned that “if the UNSC’s inaction on such issues will continue “then your appeals to restraint by all sides can become futile.”
China’s deputy permanent envoy Dai Bing noted Tehran’s statement that its military action was in reply to Israel’s aggression against his diplomatic premises and “the matter can be deemed settled.”
