SYDNEY: Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong has said that Canberra will consider recognizing a Palestinian state, aligning with efforts to achieve a two-state solution aimed at resolving the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
During a speech on Tuesday evening, Wong endorsed remarks made by Britain’s Foreign Minister David Cameron, who emphasized that recognizing a Palestinian state, potentially at the United Nations, could solidify the path toward an irreversible two-state solution.
Wong emphasized that the international community is actively engaged in discussions surrounding Palestinian statehood as a means to advance momentum toward a lasting resolution to the conflict. Speaking at the Australian National University, she reiterated the critical importance of a two-state solution, asserting that it offers the sole hope for breaking the cycle of violence that has plagued the region for decades.
In recent developments, the Palestinian Authority formally requested renewed consideration by the United Nations Security Council of its 2011 application for full membership, seeking to elevate its status from a non-member observer state. The Security Council president subsequently referred the application to the admission committee.
