Woman Dead, Dozen Missing in Italy After Heavy Rains

CASAMICCIOLA TERME, ITALY: Officials said on Sunday that one woman died and several others missing following heavy rains and landslides in Ischia Island, Italy.

Officials told the media that a woman’s dead body was found by rescue team in the area. Dozens of people went missing after the heavy rains and landslide in island.  According to officials, many people including a family and a newborn baby were rescued and shifted to safe places.

A spokesperson for the fire service, Luca Cari confirmed that one woman died in the natural disaster and feared more causalities. Media reports said that the rescue teams are confronting issues due to heavy rain and high winds in island. Officials said that in the worst affected Casamicciola, as many as 30 families were stranded in their homes without water and electricity, with mud and debris blocking the roads.

The department for civil protection said that the rescue efforts remain very complex because of the current weather conditions.

Local officials asked the residents of Ischia to stay inside in order to complete the rescue operation without any hinderance.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni extended her sympathy to the affected people and called an extraordinary cabinet meeting today to discuss the current crisis. It may be recalled that the area was hit by an earthquake in 2017. — APP
