ISLAMABAD:  Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has named its Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan as the party nominee for the slot of Pakistan’s prime minister.

Speaking to the media persons after meeting with PTI founder at Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi former speaker of the National Assembly Asad Qaiser announced that party secretary general Omar Ayub would be the party’s candidate for the prime minister’s post.

Asad Qaiser said he had also been given an “assignment” to engage with all political parties, specifically mentioning ANP, QWP and JUI-F.

Earlier, major political parties in Pakistan agreed for coalition government after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has declared results of 2024 elections. According to local media reports, political parties including PPP, PML-N, PML-Q, MQM-P, BNP and IPP announced forming the government together.

As per the ECP’s tally, the total number of general seats won by the 6 parties which announced their plans to form a coalition led by former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif — PML-N, PPP. PML-Q, IPP, MQM-P, and BAP — comes to 152.

This evidently shows that these political parties will easily achieve the minimum required number of 169 to form the government at the Centre following the addition of 60 women and 10 minority seats in their count.

However, it is yet to be seen if these political parties will be in position to get to the next magic number of 224, which is needed to obtain the elusive two-thirds majority in a 336-member National Assembly.

PML-N announced that party leader Nawaz Sharif has nominated Shehbaz Sharif for the post of the prime minister and Maryam Nawaz for the slot of Chief Minister Punjab.
