BERLIN: In an interview published by German media on Saturday, NATO’s Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, called on Europe to boost its arms production to aid Ukraine and avert potential prolonged confrontation with Moscow.
Stoltenberg emphasized the need to accelerate the reconstitution and expansion of Europe’s industrial base to bolster support for Ukraine and replenish stockpiles. He stressed the urgency of transitioning from slow peacetime production to high-tempo conflict manufacturing.
Amid Ukraine’s ongoing battle against Russian forces, Western leaders have echoed calls for increased military assistance. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US President Joe Biden urged US lawmakers to approve a long-pending military aid package for Ukraine during a meeting on Friday, warning of the dire consequences if assistance is not provided.
Stoltenberg highlighted the importance of safeguarding NATO countries in the face of regular threats from the Kremlin, underscoring that peace in Europe cannot be taken for granted.
While NATO seeks to avoid conflict with Russia, Stoltenberg warned of the potential for protracted confrontation. He emphasized the necessity of supporting Ukraine and strengthening NATO’s capabilities to deter aggression.
NATO defence ministers are scheduled to convene in Brussels on February 15, ahead of the second anniversary of Russia’s offensive in Ukraine. The meeting will include discussions within the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, underscoring the ongoing importance of addressing the conflict in Ukraine.
