Beijing: China on Thursday asked the U.S. to stop suppressing Chinese students in the United States in the pretext of national security.

The statement was made by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin at a regular press briefing in reply to a report that the America has recently questioned and inspected the portable instruments of several Chinese students entering the United States with some students having their visas suspended and not permitted to enter the U.S. for 5 years.

For a long time, the U.S. has questioned, detained and also repatriated Chinese students with valid visas and certificates, which is motivated by political objectives, said Wang.

The spokesperson called the U.S.’s approach selective, discriminatory, and politically motivated law enforcement acts, which China strongly opposes.

He added the U.S. also promulgated the so-called Proclamation 10043, abused the concept of national security, repeatedly repatriated Chinese students and politicized academic research while seriously undermining the lawful rights and interests of Chinese students in the U.S., violating the consensus reached by the two sides on facilitating people-to-people exchanges.

Wang asked Washington to genuinely welcome Chinese students as it has said, withdraw the biased and discriminatory Proclamation 10043, ensured the safety and legitimate rights and interests of Chinese students and scholars in the U.S., and take practical measures to fulfill its commitment to support and facilitate US-China people-to-people exchanges.

He further said that Beijing will continue to take necessary steps to defend Chinese citizens’ lawful rights and interests and remind the students heading for the United States to be mindful of such risks.
