BAGHDAD: Defense systems have shot down an armed drone over Ain al-Assad airbase in Iraq, Western media reported on Monday.

Reports citing Iraqi army sources said that the base hosts US and other international forces in western Iraq.

The attack which took place in the early hours of Monday, did not cause casualties or damage. According to security source this is the second such attack hours after a drone was shot down on Sunday over Erbil airport in northern Iraq where US and other international forces are stationed.

Since October 17, there have been over 106 attacks on American forces in Syria and Iraq.

Last week, a drone was shot down near Erbil Airport that caused the airport to suspend its operations.

Iraqi military spokesman Yahya Rasool said that the incident has caused some injuries, and interrupted the schedule of the commercial flights.

US military conducted a retaliatory air strike in Iraq after a drone attack left one US service member in critical condition and injured two other US personnel.

The majority of the attacks have been claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a loose alliance of armed groups that oppose US support for Israel in the war on Gaza.
