WASHINGTON, DC: US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller issued a statement commending the Kingdom’s role as the host and welcomed the involvement of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on behalf of the African Union as a co-facilitator, according to SPA.

The news agency said the ceasefire discussions, reconvened with the collaboration of the United States, Saudi Arabia and IGAD, aimed to address various critical objectives including facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid, establishing ceasefires, implementing confidence-building measures, and working towards a permanent cessation of hostilities in Sudan.

These discussions are in with the Jeddah Declaration of Commitment to Protect the Civilians of Sudan, initially signed on May 11, as reported by the news agency.

Miller stressed the need for constructive engagement from all conflicting parties saying, “the time has come to stop the senseless violence, resume civilian governance, and let the people of Sudan achieve their demands for freedom, peace, and justice.”
