BEIJING: Beijing authorities have issued an orange alert due to severe air pollution, which became effective at noon on Monday.

The orange alert, the second-highest level in Beijing’s warning system, is activated when the city experiences either two consecutive days of severe air pollution or three consecutive days of moderate air pollution.

Emergency response measures will be enforced from Tuesday to Thursday, which includes mandatory restrictions on heavy-polluting vehicles.

The Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau has recommended that children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory, cardiovascular, or chronic health conditions stay indoors and for others to limit outdoor activities.

Unfavorable weather conditions have been identified as the cause of the smog enveloping Beijing and its neighboring regions, according to the bureau. The current air pollution episode in Beijing is anticipated to dissipate by Friday, as indicated by the weather forecast. —Xinhua/APP
