NEW YORK: Afghanistan’s National Resistance Front (NRF) has said that an overwhelming majority of countries oppose transferring Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations to the Taliban, following discussions with members of the UN Security Council.
Abdullah Khenjani, an NRF spokesman, said on Tuesday that he had met several Security Council members in New York to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.
In a statement, Khenjani claimed that most countries had made a final decision that Afghanistan’s UN seat would not be handed over to the Taliban. He described the position as a significant indication of the international community’s continued reluctance to recognise the Taliban as Afghanistan’s legitimate representative.

Khenjani said the reported opposition to the move was encouraging for Afghans who oppose Taliban rule and want a democratic political alternative.
The Taliban returned to power in August 2021 and have repeatedly sought to have their representatives take Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations. However, the UN Credentials Committee has yet to approve a change in the country’s representation.

The question of Afghanistan’s UN representation remains significant as the international community continues to navigate its engagement with the Taliban-led administration and concerns about political legitimacy and governance.
