UN Warns of Budget Cuts in Afghanistan

KABUL: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has said that one billion dollars are needed to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan, local media reported on Thursday.

The UN agency said that it can only provide food assistance to one in every ten needy Afghan nationals.

In a statement on social media platform X, formerly twitter, the organisation once again warned about the budget gap in Afghanistan.

It said 10 million Afghans have been deprived of humanitarian support this year.

Furthermore, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in is latest report has warned about declining health services in Afghanistan due to limited budget.

It is pertinent to mention that the WFP earlier asked for one billion dollars to assist 21 million people, out of which 20 million Afghans are at risk of starvation.

Many humanitarian organizations have expressed concern on funding cuts and a looming humanitarian disaster in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan, a country heavily dependent on aid, lost Western donor support after Taliban’s return to power in 2021.
