Russian Mountaineer Believed Dead in Northern Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: A Russian mountaineer is believed to have died while trying to scale a peak in northern Pakistan, the country’s official mountaineering organization said on Wednesday.

Karrar Haidri, Secretary-General of the Alpine Club of Pakistan told Turkish media that Dmitry Golovchenko, who was attempting Gasherbrum IV along with his countryman, Sergey Nilov, is believed to have suffered a fatal fall.

Nilov, however, came back to the base came safely after being rescued by Pakistan army helicopter and transferred to a military hospital in Skardu.

Golovchenko was trying to summit Gasherbrum IV in the Karakoram from a most challenging route.

A search mission, which was stopped due to bad weather, will be resumed on Thursday to locate the missing climber.

The two climbers had already won Piolet d’Or award which is considered Alpine climbing’s biggest prize.
