ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has been arrested again immediately after his release. The arrest took place shortly after he was freed from the Police lines in Islamabad.
Pervaiz Elahi had exited the Police lines in his vehicle alongside his lawyer, Advocate Sardar Abdur Razaq. However, upon leaving the premises, he and his driver were taken out of the vehicle, and Pervaiz Elahi was reportedly rearrested outside the Police lines.
Police officials have stated that the PTI president was arrested by officials from the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) in connection with a case related to an attack on the judicial complex. The case against Pervaiz Elahi was registered at the CTD police station on September 3, and he is set to be presented before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on the following day, Wednesday.
IHC Suspends Pervaiz Elahi’s Detention
Earlier in the day, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had suspended Pervaiz Elahi’s detention under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance, ordering his immediate release. The former Punjab chief minister had challenged his arrest under the MPO in the IHC, seeking the annulment of his arrest and his prompt release.
The IHC also directed Pervaiz Elahi to appear before the court in the next hearing and advised him not to make any statements until the upcoming hearing. His arrest under the MPO had been part of a broader crackdown against PTI leaders following the riots on May 9.
Pervaiz Elahi had previously been arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on August 14, pertaining to a case involving failure to provide information in assets beyond means investigation, which also implicated his son, Monis Elahi, and other family members.
