QUETTA: The price of sugar in the retail markets of Quetta, Balochistan has jumped to a record high of Rs 220 per kg, on Friday.

Sugar, which was earlier selling at Rs 200, suddenly saw an increase of Rs 20 per kg in Balochistan to hit an all-time high of Rs 220.

The wholesale price of the commodity is Rs 210 per kg in the province, while a 50 kg bag fetched Rs 10,500, market sources said.

According to dealers, the price of the commodity increased after sugar supplies were suspended as vehicles were stuck on the national highways following the suspension of permits.

The sudden rise in the price of sugar has added to the misery of people who are already bearing the brunt of inflation.

Earlier sources claimed that the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has ruled out a shortage of sugar in Pakistan

The clarification came after sources claimed that Pakistan was seeking to import sugar from Brazil.

Sources in the ministry said Pakistan has sufficient sugar reserves of more than 2 million metric tonnes, enough for the country’s consumption till December.
