NEW YORK: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday strongly condemned North Korea’s launch of a spy military satellite that ended in failure.

He called upon Pyongyang to stop violating Security Council resolutions. His spokesperson Florencia Soto Nino said any launch by the DPRK using ballistic missile technology is against the Security Council resolutions.

DPRK urged to resume dialogue without preconditions

The UN official added the Secretary-General reiterated his call on the DPRK to stop such acts and to resume dialogue without preconditions so that peace could be achieved.

This was Pyongyang’s second failed attempt to launch a satellite into space. As per media reports the spy satellite developed problems as it reached the third stage.

North Korea’s National Aerospace Development Administration carried out the second launch of satellite Malligyong-1 in Cholsan County of North Phyongan Province.

Pyongyang on Tuesday conveyed Japan’s coast guard about the launching of a satellite between August 24 and 31. Japan soon after the development, moved its ships and put its PAC-3 missile defense system on alert in case anything was to land in its territory.

The launch comes just after leaders of the US, Japan and South Korea met at Camp David in the US, following the start of a major US-South Korea joint military exercise on Monday.
