TOKYO: In a move aimed at bolstering diplomatic relations and energy security, Japan has confirmed its participation in an upcoming meeting of foreign ministers from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states.

The meeting is slated to take place in Saudi Arabia during the first week of September, as reported by a GCC source to Arab News Japan on Monday.

Japan’s engagement in the meeting aligns with its strategic goal of fostering stronger connections with oil-producing countries in the Gulf region. Ensuring a stable energy supply from the Middle East remains a key priority for Japan, which relies heavily on imports of oil and liquefied natural gas.

Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa is slated to attend the meeting, which may also coincide with potential visits to Egypt and Jordan, according to media sources.

Engagement Between Japan and GCC

The GCC is composed of six nations in the Gulf region, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain. Japan’s Prime Minister Kishida Fumio’s visit to the Middle East in July laid the foundation for increased engagement between Japan and the GCC, as both parties announced their intention to resume talks on a free trade agreement.

At the upcoming foreign ministers’ meeting, discussions are expected to cover various topics. These may include deliberations on a potential free trade deal and technical collaboration related to next-generation energy sources. Notably, the agenda could also encompass discussions on Iran’s nuclear program.

Resource-scarce Japan’s robust energy security strategy seeks to mitigate its dependence on imports, particularly in relation to oil and natural gas. With over 90 percent of its crude oil supply coming from the Middle East, Japan’s engagement with the GCC underscores its commitment to securing a reliable energy supply and fostering diplomatic ties in the region.
