OSLO: NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Thursday that only Kyiv could decide the terms of a possible peace talks with Moscow. He reiterated the NATO’s stance after provocative statement by his chief of staff, AFP reported.

Stoltenberg said that it is up to Ukrainians alone, to decide when the terms and conditions for dialogues are in place, and to decide in peace talk, what a suitable solution is,”. He maintained that their job is to support Ukrainians.

The NATO chief was speaking at an event in Arendal, where two days earlier Stian Jenssen, the director of the private office of the NATO chief, recommended that one solution to the war could be that Kyiv be granted NATO membership in exchange for surrendering some of its area to Moscow. However, he later walked back his statement. The NATO Secretary General said that NATO’s policy is unmoved.
He added that they supported Ukraine in its internationally recognized borders, its territorial integrity and sovereignty. During a NATO summit in Vilnius in July, Kyiv was offered long standing military help but no NATO membership.
