DAR ES SALAAM: A collision between a bus and a train engine tragically claimed the lives of at least 13 passengers while leaving 25 others with serious injuries in the Singida region in central Tanzanian on early Wednesday.
Stellah Mutahibirwa, the Singida regional police commander at the collision site, expressed concern that the death toll might increase, stating, “The number of fatalities could escalate, given that a majority of the 25 injured passengers are in critical condition.”
The bus, carrying 57 passengers, struck the train engine at a railway crossing around 5 a.m. local time.
Mutahibirwa said that it appeared the bus driver attempted to cross the railway without taking necessary precautions. The train engine was reportedly engaged in its routine shunting activities at the time of the unfortunate incident.
