ISLAMABAD: Pakistan cricket legend Younis Khan has urged young Islamabad United wicketkeeper-batter Azam Khan to place greater emphasis on fitness if he hopes to enjoy a lengthy and successful career.

Speaking at a recent press event, Younis highlighted the crucial role that diet and discipline play for professional athletes, particularly at the international level.

“We all enjoy a burger—I do as well—but as professional sportsmen, we must exercise self-control. Diet and discipline are essential at this level. If Azam Khan wants to carve out a lasting and successful career, fitness needs to be his top priority. There are no shortcuts,” said Younis Khan.

His remarks come amid ongoing criticism aimed at the 26-year-old Azam, whose powerful hitting has earned him recognition but also scrutiny over his physical condition.

Despite making an impression in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) with Islamabad United and earning a call-up to the national T20 side, his international stint was short-lived due to concerns around his fitness and agility.

Azam’s weight and stamina have been frequent subjects of debate among fans and pundits alike.

Even after a brisk 45 off 28 deliveries against Peshawar Zalmi in PSL 2025, some observers noted his struggles when running between the wickets.

Nonetheless, Azam continues to impress on occasion with bursts of agility behind the stumps and impactful performances with the bat, proving he still has the potential to turn heads despite ongoing criticism.
