SANAA: Yemen’s National Defence Council has ordered the expansion of air and missile strikes against Houthi targets, pledging further retaliatory operations as fighting intensifies across several front lines.

The council, which represents Yemen’s internationally recognised government, issued the directive on Monday during a meeting to review the country’s military and security situation following a series of Houthi ballistic missile and drone attacks.

According to Yemen’s Armed Forces Media Centre, the attacks targeted displacement camps, residential areas and vital installations, leaving dozens of people dead or wounded, including women and children.

The council commended government forces for their performance on the Marib and western coast fronts, saying troops had successfully repelled Houthi attacks and inflicted “painful losses” on the Iran-backed group.

It directed the relevant authorities to quickly assess the damage caused by recent Houthi missile and drone attacks and ensure medical treatment for those wounded. It also called for assistance to be provided to the families of those killed in the attacks.

Meanwhile, Yemen’s armed forces said they had carried out 133 military operations against Houthi fighters over 24 hours, targeting the group’s personnel and military capabilities.

Armed forces spokesperson Colonel Majed al-Nuzaili said in a post on X that the operations involved rocket launchers, artillery and drones and were directed at “sources of threat”.

He said army units positioned along the front lines also participated in the operations as government forces sought to counter Houthi attacks and weaken the group’s military capabilities.

The latest developments point to a further escalation in Yemen’s prolonged conflict, with both sides reporting intensified military activity and casualties.

The Houthi movement, which controls large parts of northern and western Yemen, has been engaged in a long-running conflict with the internationally recognised government and its allied forces.
