ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON: The World Bank has announced $1.78 billion in aid to Turkey to assist relief and recovery efforts after a massive quake hit the country and neighboring Syria, western media reported on Thursday.

In a statement, World Bank President David Malpass said that they are providing immediate help and preparing a fast assessment of the urgent and huge needs on the ground.

According to official social media account of the World Bank, the help will be crucial in meeting Turkey’s relief and reconstruction needs after the terrible earthquake. The World Bank said that it is also taking steps to assess the damages and identify priority areas for help and assistance.
Reports said that more than 20,000 people have died after Monday’s earthquake in southern parts of Turkey and northern areas of Syria.
