LOS ANGELES: At least six people have been killed in a wildfire that erupted in a Hawaiian town, forcing people to flee into the ocean to save their lives, western media reported on Wednesday.
According to reports the fire fanned by strong winds razed homes and businesses in Lahaina town on the island of Maui, a major tourist attraction.
Maui County Mayor Richard Missen said six people died in the tragic incident but did not give any further details.
He said at least 20 people were also injured, including a firefighter who suffered smoke inhalation. He added three injured are in serious condition.
The official warned that the total number of deaths could increase as emergency staff is making rescue and search operations and evacuations as well.

About 4,000 tourists have been stuck on the island due to the unprecedented situation and trying to leave the island desperately.
Wildfire Kills Six in Hawaiian Town
County of Maui spokesperson Mahina Martin told media that fires were widespread in Lahaina Town, including on Front Street, a shopping and dining area popular with tourists.
The county in its tweet, asked tourists not to go to Lahaina Town as it was closed to everyone except emergency personnel.
There is no electricity for thousands of Hawaiians, and the fire is spreading very fast.
The reports say the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the US Marines are helping the local authorities to extinguish the fire and in search and rescue operations, the White House said on Wednesday.
